Formatting your hard drive into FAT32 is essential as the PS3 only reads FAT32 drives, well at the moment atleast. To format it into FAT32 you can try using the windows 7 in-built disk management software, but i couldn’t get it to work so i just downloaded EASEUS Partition Manager 3.0 Unlimited Edition. It worked like a charm in under a few seconds.

I would also advise to be signed out of playstation network and not sign into it when using a jailbroken ps3
I would also advise you not to update you console from a jailbroken state… say 3.55 Custom Firmware to 3.56 Official Firmware
Good news is, that the jailbreak is not permanent ! To find out how to reverse it, so you can play online again, please go to point 9, which is almost at the end of this tutorial
1) CHECK
The first thing to do is to check you playstation 3′s current firmware. The jailbreak can only happen if the PS3 is firmware 3.55 or lower (Not sure about back dating from 3.56 have a look on google)
To check your ps3 firmware you have to go on your playstation 3 and go to:
Settings > System Settings If this is mneaw’s 3.55 CFW patched PUP , please ignore the bit below in green and go straight to point 2!
If not, then install the official sony 3.55 firmware. This can he found here:

Put the file on your external HDD here:
PS3 > UPDATE > PS3UPDAT.PUP
To install it you will probably have to boot it up in recovery mode. I would first try to install it via the System > Update System route. If this fails you will have to use recovery mode. To enter recovery mode you have to power off the PS3 and then:
#1 Press and hold the power button and the PS3 will boot up and then shut down again. Release the power button once the PS3 has shut down.
#2 Press and hold the power button and hold it until the PS3 does 2 quick beeps once this has happened release the power button and the PS3 should boot up in recovery mode.
#3 Choose the bottom option which is System Update.
#4 This will scan the External HDD and then ask you if you want to install the 3.55 firmware. Select YES, the PS3 should install the firmware and reboot the PS3
Check the PS3 firmware by going to
System > System Information
2) DOWNLOAD CUSTOM FIRMWARE
The second thing you will have to do is download the playstation 3 jailbreak. There are many jailbreaks flying around the internet but the one i have found to be the best is the mneaw’s 3.55 CFW patched PUP one.

3) JAILBREAK
When you have downloaded the firmware you will have to install it. To do this you will have to plug in your FAT32 formatted external harddrive and create a folder called PS3 inside this folder create another folder called UPDATE inside this fold you need to put the file you downloaded, this should be called PS3UPDAT.PUP so to recap
External HDD > PS3 > UPDATE > PS3UPDAT.PUP
Once you have done this you are then able to install the update. To do this plug the external hard drive into the PS3 and go to:
Settings > System Update > System update via storage media
Follow the on screen instruction and this should install the ps3 custom firmware (CFW) the PS3 should restart once this has completed.
4) Once the custom firmware has installed if you go to the Game section on the XMB there should be two new items appeared. These are:
Install packages and APP_HOME/PS3_Game if these are not here then the ps3 has not been jailbroken.
If this was successful ignore the Green text Below and go to Point 5.
If for some reason you cannot install the firmware this way you will have to install it in recovery mode. To enter recovery mode you have to power off the PS3 and then:

5) DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL GAME BACKUP MANAGER
How to installed games on your freshly jailbroken PS3, the first thing you will have to do is download a game backup manager. Once again there are many of these all over the internet and for the purpose of this tutorial i will use one that i know works, well for me of course.
The game manager than i use is called GAIA MANAGER v2.07 this can be downloaded from here:

Once downloaded you will have to load the file onto you external hard drive. The file will have to be placed in the ROOT directory of the external hard drive. When you open the file you downloaded there should be three files, these are:
1 = UP0001-GAIA01985_00-7679866932773369-V2.07-GAMEZ.pkg
2 = UP0001-GAIA01985_00-7679866932773369-V2.07-GAMES.pkg
3 = UP0001-GAIA01985_00-7679866932773369-V2.07-BDRIPS.pkg
All three of the files are the game you only need one of them in your root directory but the one you choose if personal preference but i always choose the -GAMES.pkg one. You will have to remember which one you choose later on.
Example EXTERNAL HDD > UP0001-GAIA01985_00-7679866932773369-V2.07-GAMES.PKG
Plug you External HDD back into the PS3 and go to the install packages button on the Game directory on the XMB. you should see the file come up and just press “X” on it this will install the backup manager on the PS3. When this has completed you should see GAIA manager under the GAME tab on the PS3 if so then you has successfully installed the backup manager.
6) INSTALLING GAMES FROM EXTERNAL HDD
Now on to the best and most important part of it installing the games. For this example i will use little big planet 2.
Once you have downloaded the game you will have to extract it using winrar. Once extracted you should be left with 1 folder called (for this game) “BCES-00850” or something along those lines.
You need to put this folder on your external HDD but not just in the root directory you need to create a folder called “GAMES” if you chose the GAMES one from the GAIA manager download:

if not you will either have to call it GAMEZ or BDRIPS depending on what you picked (mentioned above in Point 5).
EXTERNAL HDD > GAMES > BCES-00850
Once you have put the game on your external HDD plug it into you PS3. Then load up gaia manager and you should see LITTLE BIG PLANET 2 in the manager you have many options when in gaia manager. If you wish to play the game straight from the external HDD then just press “X this will then take you back the to XMB where your current game disc (the one in your drive, if you don’t have one in put one in lol!) will change from w£ver it was to little big planet 2″
My example was that i had fifa 09 in went through the gaia manager loaded the game and it changed to Little big planet 2.
NOTE: Playing games from the external hard drive in my own experience is all well and good as long as the game isnt too big for example just cause 2, GTA:IV because it will still work it will just take a lot longer to load the content but games like little big planet 2 and the simpsons game play fine. Sometimes the game crashes or if your nudge the HDD it might lag a bit but other than that its fine i play a lot of my games from external HDD
7) INSTALLING GAMES FROM DISC
If you have the original game disc for example fifa 11 and you want to rip it to your PS3′s internal HDD or your External HDD the GAIA manager can do this. All you have to do is insert the game disc, load up gaia manager and press “O”
The first option will be to rip the game to the PS3′s internet hdd if you press no it will then ask you if you want to rip it to you external HDD
8 ) INSTALLING GAMES FROM EXTERNAL HDD THAT ARE BIGGER THAN 4GB (FAT32 Restrictions)
If the game you are downloading has 1 single file that is bigger than 4gb an example of this is red dead redemption or medal of honor (the only 2 i have encountered so far) then the game wont fit on the external HDD due to the fact that it is formatted in FAT32.
There are a few ways of getting around this like FTP etc…. but i found an easier way. Because we are using GAIA manager we can use a thing called a PS3 Splitter The PS3 splitter say splits a single file that is say 8gb for example into 2 that are 4gb that will fit on the External HDD. To use the splitter you will have to launch the PS3Splitter.exe this will load up with the application. When loaded click Execute. This will load up with the “Browse For Folderr” box.
From here you will have to browse to your PS3 game, For this example i will use medal of honor.
So browse to BLUS-30436 (The game larger than 4gb) and then go to PS3_GAME > PKGDIR > PKG00 > Install.PKG
Every game might be slightly different but you are just basically locating the file that is bigger than 4gb Once you have done this click ok. The program will split the game file into several files. My example split the game into 5 files each just slightly over 1gb.
Then just put the game on your External HDD and install it (See point 6 in the tutorial)
9) Removing the Custom Firmware (Jailbreak)
To remove the CFW jailbreak from the playstation 3 you will have to download the official sony firmware from here:
